I'm on the hunt for a Job™
A wee bit about me
For everyone on here, I'm Ishiat, and that's definitely somewhat of a pseudonym. I figured I was heavily into genetics when I was thirteen, and I haven't looked back since. This piped pretty directly into an engineering undergrad from India, specialising in biotechnology. I've since realised my heart lies in Bioinformatics, moved to the UK and done an MSc (Bioinformatics, duh). I graduated in November '25, and moved here to Sheffield in Jan '26.
What I'm looking for
I'm currently on the lookout for either a PhD or, well, employment. I am classed as an international student, and need a fully funded PhD that covers international fees. Within bioinfo, my most pervasive niches have been Precision Medicine and Translational Medicine. I also have a somewhat tangential neurobiological interest. I'm okay to move to any part of the UK, and I'll be moving in from Sheffield.
Roles that suit me probably look like:
- Bioinformatician
- Research Assistant
- Data Analyst
- Data Scientist
- Software Developer
...and other similar things!
A bunch of people doing cool science I like: Rob Young, Hilary Martin, Patrick Chinnery, and Catherine Crompton.
These aren't necessarily people I've contacted, as much as they're just researchers who I've come across and thought "Huh, this is cool, this is the brand of science I wanna be doing."
Skills!
I'd say population genetics (and everything that huge, huge umbrella involves) is my best foot forward. I've gotten pretty good at GWAS and other related things, and I'm now working on sharpening more multiomic (transcriptomes and the like) stuff. I'm also proficient in Python, Bash and R. This is super cliche, but I know I can learn and pick things up super fast too!
What I'm currently up to
I'm currently interning as a Medical Writer/Scientific Content Developer, and phasing into some medico-legal reviewing as well. I've been here about six months, and currently write and review content (educational courses, pamphlets, scientific writing materials, etc.) for pharma/bio sector companies. It's a fab job, but I miss programming and problem solving as part of an overarching research hypothesis, and I'm trying to get back into that environment.
Aside from my scientific background (which I'm happy to go into more detail on in a more private space), I also bring to the table this experience in instructional design and medical writing, which puts me in a pretty neat position for roles (this is honestly more geared to a certain subtype of PhDs, but whatever sticks) that involve teaching. On a sidenote, it's also really cool to be working here. I want to be a professor, and this place teaches me things about learning and delivering lessons I probably wouldn't have learnt (at least, not in the same way or pace) elsewhere.
If you think I'm the kind of person you're looking for, are in a similar boat and wanna yap about it, wanna send me cool research, or just say hi, you can write to me here!
